Thomas Rye is currently a high school mathematics teacher with 25 years of exemplary classroom experience at the secondary levels. He is a National Board–certified mathematics teacher, department lead at the high school level, and former Teacher of the Year for the state of Washington. He is also currently serving as a Secondary math Coordinator for Spokane Public Schools. He has been a pioneer and leader in the implementation of standards based grading and virtual math courses for secondary schools, promoting virtual learning as an effective vehicle for differentiating math instruction. Thomas has over 10 years of experience as a national educational consultant in the areas of mathematics, Understanding by Design®, and Standards-Based instruction, assessment and grading. He has also served as an adjunct professor of math education for Gonzaga University. Rye’s professional learning focus is on helping educators internalize the ideas of the Understanding by Design® framework for practical use in the classroom. He also specializes in mathematics instruction, Common Core mathematics at the secondary level, standards based instruction, and instructional technology. Thomas has presented at numerous regional, national, and international conferences and for schools and districts across the United States. His passion revolves around promoting high quality, student-centered math instruction.
