Performance-based tasks that are intended to engage students in applying their knowledge and skills in authentic and relevant contexts. Like a cornerstone anchors a building, such tasks can anchor the curriculum around the most important performances that we want learners to be able to do with the content knowledge and skills they are learning.

Authentic performance tasks call for students to apply their learning in meaningful ways; e.g., to “closely” read texts, investigate contemporary issues, develop and critique arguments, solve “messy” problems requiring sound reasoning, engage in scientific inquiry and communicate in a variety of media. Such tasks can be used as rich learning activities as well as performance assessments. They enable the integration of 21st century skills (e.g., critical thinking, creativity, technology use, teamwork) with subject area content. They are engaging and motivational for learners since they involve “real world” applications, and frequently allow for student choice and creativity.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • practical and proven tools and templates for designing authentic performance tasks;
  • a protocol for aligning performance tasks to academic standards and 21st century skills;
  • a structured process for developing and refining scoring rubrics; and
  • Curriculum Mapping 3.0 – how to map the curriculum around authentic tasks.

You will also receive and preview a collection of excellent websites containing rich performance tasks and associated rubrics for many subject areas.
